Jammu & Kashmir is India’s northern-most state, lying between six mountain ranges and covering an area of 2, 22,236 sq. kilometres. It is located between 32°17' and 36°58' North latitude, and between 37°26' and 80°30' East longitude. The state commonly known as Kashmir is bounded on the north by Afghanistan and China, on the east by China, on the south by the state of Himachal Pradesh and the state of Punjab in India, and on the west by the North-West Frontier Province and the Punjab Province of Pakistan.
Jammu and Kashmir actually comprises of three regions: the foothill plains of Jammu; the lakes and blue valleys of Kashmir rising to alpine passes, the high altitude plains and starkly beautiful mountains of Ladakh which lies beyond narrow passes.
Kashmir ‘paradise on earth’ KASHMIR perched at an average height of 1515 metres above sea level .two major Himalayan ranges, the greater Himalaya and the Pir-panjal, surround the valley from the north and south respectively.

The capital city Srinagar is famous for its canals, house-boats and Mughal gardens.
The Dal Lake is Srinagar’s most distinctive land mark. Its amaze of intricate waterways and channels floating islands of vegetations and house-boat.the best way of exploring the lake and the sites on its shore is by Shikara boat. Srinagar’s main attraction is the charm of in a house-boat.the experience of living on the lakes in a cedar-panelled elegant bed-room.
The distinctive feature of Srinagar is the Mughal gardens with their terraced lawns, cascading fountains and bright flower beds. Mughal gardens are located on route between Dal Lake and Zabarwan mountain range around the boulevard.
(royal springs), on the foot hills of Zabarwan range, has a famous spring. This garden was laid out in 1632 by Ali Mardan khan.
(palace of fairies) three km ahead of Cheshmashahi housed a school of astrology built by prince Dhara Shuko, eldest son of Shahjahan who had keen interest in observation of stars and Sufism.
Designed in 1634 A.D by Asif khan eldest brother of Noor Jahan. This garden has 7 terraces and a stone channel for running water in the centre. Largest of Mughal gardens measuring 548 metres.
( garden of love) was built by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Noor jahan in 1616.it has 4 terraces with similar water channel running in the middle. It also has some mughal structure from black marble which were used for the guests of the emperor as banquet hall.
THE OLD CITY:
A very interesting and learning sight-seeing option in Srinagar is the “old city” which has a quaint medieval charm of its own and a strong tradition of handicrafts. The old city conceals. Within its maze, Kashmir many ancient shrines and mosques among which Shah-i-Hamadan, Pather masjid, Jamia masjid and Dastagir sahib are the most prominent.
Srinagar is endowed with many historic buildings and heritage sites.
SITUATED ON THE WESTERN SHORE OF DAL LAKE is the most prestigious mosque. The shrine can also be visited via Dal Lake in a shikara. Enshrines the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The historical mosque where large congregations are held. The foundation of mosque was laid by Sultan Sikandar in 1398 A.D and enlarged by Zain-ul-Abidin. Its an architectural wonder with 370 pillars supporting the roof with large courtyards for prayers.
Stands atop a hill known as Takht-e-Suleman. The legend describes building of temple by King Solomon in 3000 B.C to store the treasure of 300 golden and silver- statue.
(27 KM) IN TULLA MULLA village is another Kashmir’s living Hindu heritage sites. It’s a temple in the mid of spring which symbolises the Ragnya DEVI, and is affectionately known as Kheer Bhawani.
(2650 M/56KM): Is one of India’s premier hill resorts.
Gulmarg has spectacular view due to natural growth of flowers like blue bells, Daisies and variety of flora. In summer horse riding and buggy riding in Gulmarg is a delightful experience. The green carpeted meadows offer a pleasant view to tourists and perfect level of slopes to the golfer’s. There is an excellent golf club, established in 1902, the highest golf course in the world.
Gulmarg is known as the meadow of flowers and was once a favorite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who collected 21 different varieties of wild flowers from here. It is the best Ski resort in the country and maintains the high-quality service. It also holds a position as one of the highest lift served Ski resorts in the world. It is the first place to offer heli-skiing in Asia, where a helicopter takes one to the chosen peak from where one can choose one's own descent route. Sledges and snow cycles are also popular here during winters and trekking opportunities here are numerous. The 18-hole Gulmarg Golf Club is in existence for 100 years and was established by Sir Neville Chamberlain. The Clubhouse, with its sloping roof, has a rare character. Golfing holidays here during summers are popular in this lush green bowl covered with a variety of alpine flowers with snow fed streams and rivulets passing through it.
The Gondola cable car:
offers rids to the up land meadow kongdori and beyond to top of Apharwat range to a height of 14,000ft for viewing the Himalayan peaks in summer and for downhill skiing in winter.

Pahalgam IS situated at the confluence of the Sheshnag and the Lidder streams. It is Kashmir’s premier summer resort; cool even during the height of snow. The resort is surrounded many place of interest, the best being the upland meadows of Baisaran. Shikargha is another picnic spot reachable on foot or by pony. Aru a village 11km from Pahalgam with a motor able road from here, a famous trek leads to the kolohoi glaciers 3400ms via lidder wat 248 ms (2-3) days trek. CHANDANWARI (2,895m), 16km from Pahalgam is the starting point for the annual Amaranthji yatra held in summer. Pahalgam has an astounding 9 holes golf course open for tourists. Golf seta can be hired out from tourists’ office. The snow capped peaks in the backdrop and lush green pine forests soothe the eyes of the travelers. The Liddar River is popular among travelers interested in angling and trout fishing. Virgin pine forests, clear mountain streams, and meadows of wildflowers mark Pahalgam as part of the paradisiacal beauty of Kashmir.The mention of Pahalgam is found in the regions ruled by the Mughals in the medieval period. Local Hindu kings later ruled over it as a part of the Kingdom of Kashmir until this princely state annexed into India, after independence.

Ascending Sindh River makes it more adventurous. Rafting is done in full swing. sindh river is a natural hatchery of trout fishes.
Sonamarg is the base of a major trek that passes along several mountain lakes –Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal. Sonamarg is also the take off station for the drive to Ladakh across the Zojila, a major pass in the Great Himalayan Range, through which the Srinagar-Leh Road passes.

VERINAG: 80 KM, spring here is said to be the river Jhelum. Stone basin was built by Jahangir at the spring in 1612 and the garden laid out by Shahjahan in 1620.
ACHABAL: 58 km, a Mughal garden built by Noor jahan and her sister Jahanara in 1640.a favourite retreat of Noor jahan.with typical water canal and chinar trees around.
AHRABAL: 51 km, ahra means “stream” bal “a resort” has most magnificent waterfalls formed by Veshav River coming down from a height of 24.4 metres.
DAKSUM: 90 km at an altitude of 2438 metres is the forest retreat encircled by enchanting mountains.
Dal lake: Dal lake is home to more than 1ooo house boats known their luxury & uniqueness.dal lake has two islands ropa-lank (silver island) popular as charchinari.It has 4 chinar trees. SON-LANK (Golden Island) at the south end and Nehru Park is an island just few yards away from road side. Water skiing is a favourite sport among tourist during Summer.Dal Lake is also famous for boat-market.
NAGIN LAKE: Popular for luxurious houseboats, clean water, fresh air, water sports like water skiing, swimming, diving and sailing. This area is more liked by the tourist looking for calm and quite environment.
MANASBAL LAKE: This Lake is famous for Lotus flowers during summer and Paradise for Bird Watchers,. Between the river and foot of the Mountains spurs lower end of the Sind valley famous for Picnic spot.
Wular Lake: (60) km situated between Bandipora and sopore is a largest fresh water lake in India, spread on the area 125 sq km(length 24 km and breadth 10 km).

Introduced by Shahhamdan RH in 14th, handicraft trade today is supplementary in Kashmir to the main tourism which has boosted the manufacture of carpets, shawls, papeir Mache, walnut wood carvings, fur, leather, embroidery work, copper engraving, willow and wicker crafts. SHOPPING Srinagar is a shopper’s paradise for Kashmir handicrafts which are prized every- where for their exquisite craftsmanship. The main shopping areas for handicrafts are the Boulevard, Dal gate, Polo view, The bund, Residency road and Lal chowk.
Kashmir is famous for its wazwan, which includes up to 14 non-veg dishes, if you are typical Indian food there are many dhabas and restaurants where you can delight with every variety of Punjabi, Guajarati or pure vegetarian food.
FRUITS AND DRY FRUITS: Kashmir is blessed with abundant fruit varieties which make it worthier to visit. During spring time you will relish the variety of cherries, Berries, Plums.Kashmiri apples are available in market which continues till mid winter. Pears are also available in summer.Almonds and Walnuts are available in many varieties throughout the year.
SAFFRON: WORLD WIDE FAMOUS Saffron of Kashmir is produced outside Srinagar (18 km) in the fields of Pampore located on the national highway. The saffron grows here from September to October.
